Back in the original days of Chrome OS I seem to remember that Chrome always opened maximized for that exact reason.

Google changed it so that it would open up windowed if you left it that way.

The desktop is really just a pretty background so you arent looking at a black screen behind your windows.

It keeps it clean, practical when tablet mode replaces it with your launcher, and I hardly ever go to desktop when in laptop mode.

I think using the desktop and returning to desktop is a old habit we learn from Windows.

On my Acer Chromebook R11, I can flip the keyboard around and in tablet mode it shows all the apps like when you open the app drawer.

Super nice. There should be an option to enable this.

It feels clean since it obviously doesnt get cluttered like another OSs desktop and so whatever pictures I choose isnt blocked.

I actually wish Chrome didnt start when I start up the computer.

There seems to be a lot of people divided here over how the desktop should work, hell some are even arguing about what we call it.

If they want to keep it simple and clean, they would have to sacrifice some freedom and features that people get from other OSes.

And it just so happens that this is one of the things they decided that most users can do without.

So there are things that will have a purpose down the road sometimes that they release.

It i also a design decision, much like Mac OS, Windows, Plasma, and Gnome all have different ways of doing things.

This is most useful on a larger external monitor where full screen is too big.

Unlike other desktops, Chrome Os lacks a shortcut to hide other windows or show desktop to make it easy to clear clutter and focus like this.

Call it what you want but seems like a waste of real estate to me.
